Drag Racing Results: By Dave Mance
The
weekend of September 23rd was an off-week for the track to be
open. The Division 1 bracket finals were being held at Maplegrove
Raceway that weekend, so we did not race here at Spencer Speedway.
There was a race for track officials and Big John got to run in
that class for Team Spencer Speedway. The GREAT news is Big John
took the win and brought home a Maplegrove trophy! Congratulations
to our big winner of the weekend (because he’s the ONLY one who
made it to the finals). They also had a race with Team Captains
and our own Bob Kelsch got to run, but ended up losing in the
first round. We do have some results from the other classes that
are listed as follows:
Super Pro: Kevin Switzer, John
Popp, Bob Mohr, John Vallone, Paul Kelsch, and John Cira Sr. all
went out in the first round. Jack Minardo and Craig Giordano made
it to the 2nd round only to lose with bad reaction times and
running off of their dial-in times. Mark Talmadge survived to the
3rd round only to be defeated when he ran off of his dial-in time.
Modified: Brian Moore, Rich
Garland, Larry Fillmore, Tim Vasallo, Rich Galli, Dean Olschewske
and Gary French all went out in the first round. Between red
lights and “breaking out” and just not running their numbers,
they could not get past 1st round. Mike Sutton, Howie Smith Sr.,
Mike LaRose Jr., Johnny Hurlburt and John Beasaw III all went down
in the second round again red lighting and running off their
numbers. Mike LaRose Sr. went out in round 3 when he just
couldn’t run the number on his window. Sam “the Spiderman”
Chatman made it to round 4 only to not run his dial-in time and
lose. Sam Capizzi Sr. made it the furthest by getting to round 5
only to “break out” by three thousandths of a second.
Street: John Cira Jr., Jodi
Sutton, Diane Hurlburt and Sam Capizzi Jr. all went out in the
first round. Crystelyn Guerrera made it the farthest by reaching
the second round, then losing when she ran off her dial-in time.
Motorcycles/Sleds: Greg Fillmore
was our only representative from our track to participate in this
class and he drove his sled to make it into the 4th round
eliminations only to red light and call it a day.
High School: Nick Tantalo made it
to the semi-finals and ran right on his dial-in time only to lose
the race by the reaction time. You could say “he lost on a hole
shot.”
The team ended up 12th out of 14
tracks in placement this year. Not to bad considering we run a
1/10th mile track and all the other teams run ¼ mile.
The Pro’s ran in Texas this same
weekend and Bernstein took #1 in Top Fuel. Robert Hight won in
Funny Car for the second time in as many races. Richie Stevens
took #1 in Pro Stock over Mike Edwards. Motorcycles did not run in
Texas.
If the weather holds up we will have a non-points race on
September 30th and I’ll have some results for you next week even
though I won’t be there. My wife, Suzi, and I are hoping to be
in Pennsylvania to watch the Pro’s run again, weather
permitting. I hope you all had a good weekend and my final words
this week….”There’s nothing like the smell of Nitro Fuel and
hopefully I’ll be smelling it this past weekend.”
