LIFE IS A DRAG - By Dave Mance
Who would have
thought that by mid August, we would have only one Saturday night
get rained out! The summer has been great for racing, and I think
you drivers are happy that you have had so many nights to race.
This past Saturday night, August 4, we had a good car count and
even had a few cars come from Syracuse to race. We had a lot of
spectators show up, which made things even more exciting. The
timing system worked great, and the line had great bite (ask John
Cira Sr. and Bob Mohr).
So lets get down
to business and tell you who took home the trophy’s:
Super Pro: 1st
Place - Sam Capizzi Sr., Rochester
2nd Place - Dave
Roemer, Lyons
3rd Place - Bob
Mohr, Walworth
4th Place - Steve
DiSanto, Clyde
Modified 1st Place
- Chuckie White, Ontario
2nd Place - Howard
Smith, N. Syracuse
3rd Place - Sam
Chatman, Hilton
4th Place - Paul
Northrup, Webster
Street 1st Place -
John Cira Jr., Rochester
2nd Place - Sam

2nd Place -

I have to give the
“Hard Luck” to a couple of drivers this week. Eric Beckens car
seemed to be hooking up nicely this week, but ended up with a
valve sticking in his transmission and not having it shift
correctly. Craig Giordano had his first time trial and thinks he
“sucked a valve” in his motor. I’m sure they’ll be back on
August 11th. The”Good Luck” driver has to go to Howard Smith.
He came in from Syracuse for the first time this year and ended up
being runner up in Modified.
I would like to
comment on something before I end this article. All the drivers
wanted a print out of what the payouts would be for the top four
finishers. So Cathy and John White did this and everybody seemed
OK with it. Now there is a hand full of drivers that are at the
pay window quite often. When you come to get the cash, you say it’s
not enough and doesn’t cover the complete cost of racing! Racing
is a hobby to most of you. It’s an expensive hobby that you’re
not going to get rich on, unless you go and race professionally.
There’s no guarantee you’ll make a lot of money there (racing
professionally) and it’ll cost you a lot more than what it costs
at Spencer Speedway. Please take some time to think about all the
drivers that show up every week and pay their entry fee, third
time trial, and buy back and never make it to the pay window. You
would think that they would give up and stay home because they’re
getting no return on their investment. But they come back every
week because they love to race and it’s a break from their
everyday routine. The top four are at least getting some
compensation. It’s supposed to be fun and not just about the
money. When it’s all about the money, then it’s not fun
anymore. Winning is a bonus, but sportsmanship will go a lot
further and it’s all about having fun with your fellow
racers!!!! THE END.
