Schoonmaker Slides To Win, Night Shortened By Rain by Gary Spaid

Some might say it was the “blue” full moon. Other might say it was just the way it was. It was a night full of action and odd events. Unfortunately the night was not able to be completely finished as rain moved in and washed out the NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature. Currently plans are to run this make up feature in two weeks.

The NYS Super Stocks were on hand and completed their 25-lapper. Tim Gullo, from Chemung, led all 25 laps to take the feature win. The real race was for the runner up position.

The Auto Value Scorpion feature saw their first new feature winner since the beginning of the year. Shaun Frarey was finally able to break the seven race run of feature wins put together by Timmy Catalano.

“I have been carrying more weight on the car this year after last year’s successes,” commented Frarey. “Last week the officials allowed me to take off 100 pounds. That certainly helped us tonight.”

The Super Six feature proved to be the “barn burner” of the evening. As the field was exiting the fourth turn on lap 19 of 20, the two leaders touched sending Ashley Schoonmaker sliding sideways across the finish line in front of Brandon Allen. A number of additional cars were caught up in the melee too. During the clean up process the rains began to fall forcing officials to call the feature complete.

The 25-lap NYS Super Stock feature saw pole sitter Tim Gullo power into the lead. Behind him a battle was developing for second between Tom Krawczyk and Zach Willis. Then on lap five the yellow was displayed for Nate Peckham, who spun off the first turn.

One more yellow followed, lap seven, also for the spin involving Chris Vogler and Willis.

Each restart Gullo powered into the lead by some seven car lengths, leaving the real battle for second. With Willis out of the way, Krawczyk now had his hands full with Bill Frisbee Jr. Frisbie, who had lost his complete right side of his car in a heat race altercation, was pressuring Krawczyk for the runner up spot. These two who race side-by-side in the closing laps, with Frisbie Jr. completing his pass on lap 22.

Frisbie Jr. tried to chase down Gullo, but ran out of laps. At the finish line it was Gullo followed by Frisbie Jr., Gary Noe, Mitchell Wright and Vogler rounding out the top five. Frisbie Jr. was named the “hard charger” of the race, having started 12th.

The Auto Value Scorpion feature saw Carrie Bolton break some of her poor luck as of late and grab the lead. Working his way through the pack were both Shaun Frarey and multi-time feature winner Timmy Catalano.

Frarey was able to pass Bolton just pass the halfway point in the race and began to build a significant advantage over the rest of the field. Following Frarey past Bolton were Mike Hyman and Catalano. But these two had no chance of running down Frarey.

At the finish line it was Frarey picking up his 12th career Spencer Speedway feature win. Hyman came home second followed by Catalano, Bolton and Beth Dennie to round out that division’s top five.

The Super Six feature also looked as if it could run green-to-checkers like the Scorpions. Up front Brandon Allen had held the lead from the drop of the green. He had even built up a comfortable lead. There was a pack of five cars chasing him and they seemed to be closing the gap.

Then on lap 19, Ashley Schoonmaker drove low entering the fourth turn and moved by Allen for the lead. However she was not quite passed him and they came together. Ashley seemed to correct her car, but over corrected in the process sending her spinning down the front straight, crossing the finish line. She made contact with the wall and went back out into traffic causing a big wreck. All this happen beyond the start finish line with lap 19 being completed.

The race was red flagged. But before the accident scene could be cleared the skies opened up, ending the night’s racing. The Super Six race was scored complete with Schoonmaker taking the win. Allen was placed second followed by Josh Schoonmaker, Barrett Schenk and Tim Faro.

SPENCER NOTES: A special half hour “Meet and Greet” took place on the front stretch during intermission.
