CHEMUNG
JOINS SISTER SPEEDWAY, SPENCER WITH A WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR
RACE IN 2008
WILLIAMSON, NY… Chemung and Spencer speedways promoter John White announced the addition of Chemung Speedway to the 2008 Whelen Modified Tour. “We released that the tour would be at Spencer on Saturday, July 12,” commented White. “I can now release we have signed an agreement with NASCAR to bring the Whelen Modified Tour to Chemung on Saturday, October 4. This will be the second to last Tour race on the 2008 schedule.”
“Both of our races have been scheduled for Saturdays, with Sunday rain dates,” added White. “Thus giving anyone who is following the tour the opportunity to make sure they will see a race on those weekends.”
The NASCAR Modified Championship Series began back in 1982, replacing the former system of running multiple races all year long to earn points. For Chemung this will be only the second ever appearance of the Tour at that speedway. In August 2001, the track hosted their first Tour race, which actually went for 157 laps. Jerry Marquis took the victory.
For Spencer this July’s race will mark the seventh appearance of the Tour. In 1982, the Series saw a Spencer win going to Richie Evans on September 3. Spencer hosted a Tour 200 lapper on July 4, 1983, also won by Richie Evans. Evans returned to victory lane in 1984 winning one of the Twin 75-lap races run in July. George Kent won the second 75-lapper. Kent made it two in a row, winning a 100-lapper on July 4, 1985. The series made two more stops at Spencer, in 1987 when Jeff Fuller took the 100-lap win and in 1987, the a00-lapper was won by Mike McLaughlin. Spencer then did not book a Tour race until 1994, when Mike Ewanitsko won the 100-lapper.
