SPENCER
SPEEDWAY ANNOUNCES SCHEDULE ADDITIONS FOR 2008
by Gary M.

WILLIAMSON,
NY...Officials at Spencer Speedway have announced some
major changes at their speedway starting in 2008. Track
owner John White, not only revealed he has signed on with
NASCAR’s Whelen All-American Series at both Chemung and
Spencer speedways, but went on to reveal the signing of a
Whelen NASCAR Modified Tour 100-Lapper at Spencer, set for
Saturday, July 12, 2008.
“We will
be switching nights that week, running on a Saturday,”
announced White. “We want all of the fans who have to
travel long distances to have the time to get to Spencer,
with Sunday as a potential rain date. Chemung will run on
Friday night that week.”
The last
appearance of Whelan NASCAR Tour race at Spencer came some
14 years earlier, in 1994, when Mike Ewanitsko won the
event.
The Race
of Champions (RoC) Modified tour will be returning to
Spencer on Friday, August 1, with a extra distance
Modified event. Jan Leaty won the RoC qualifier race at
Spencer in 2007 and then went on to win the RoC 200 in
Oswego Speedway in September.
“The
Modifieds will also be scheduled for four-to-eight
specials, mostly 50-lappers, throughout the summer,”
continued White. “The exact number of these special
appearances will depend on the car counts at the first few
events we schedule.”
All
modifieds with a 23 degree engine will be allowed a 650
carb in 2008.
As for the
weekly races at Spencer, the SST Modifieds will highlight
the weekly schedule. They will be joined weekly by the
Street Stocks, a new Mod Lite division and the Super
Sixes. Both the Mod-Lite and the Street Stocks will run a
650 carb.
For the
Street Stocks a crate engine (GM Crate #88958602) has been
added as optional engine for 2008. These Crates will
become the mandatory power-plants for the Street Stockers
starting in 2009. These engines will be dyno run by the
Stapleton Engine Shop. Both the shop and the racer will
then have a dyno-shop data sheet to make sure their engine
is equal to the others on the track.
“The
Crate Engine offers a less expensive way to go racing,”
added White. “Information about these Crates can be
obtained from our one and only distributor, Stapleton
Engines 607-734-1987.”
“I am
also looking at running specials for the Legend Cars, Ford
Focus Midget Series, Small-Block Super Modifieds, Vintage
Modifieds and possibly even a Super-Modified race this
coming summer,” concluded White.
Spencer
Speedway is part of the “NASCAR Nation” and the Whelen
All-American Series of speedways. The Spencer flat half
mile oval is located just fifteen minutes east of
Rochester, NY, along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson.
The opening date for 2008 has yet to be released, but is
expected in early May 2008.
